Retracing Long Lost Heritage

Last year, we went back to Kuala Terengganu to rediscover our grandfather's and grandma's heritage. Ibu was brought up in Seremban for a long time and would come back to KT for holidays. She is the youngest in the family, and did not enjoy the early period of life staying around KT.

Our grandpa used to do iron work specifically copper ware. From melting to shaping. He was once a carpenter, farmer, fisherman and also a metalsmith. Below are the pictures of his nice little lab. It seems that no body continued the work after awhile.

>>The tools that tokki used

>>The oven pit

>>The unfinished business

Not far from the workshop, theres a madrasah where my grandma used to teach. She used to teach small kids and adults on how to read quran, and Ibu always been amazed by her way of teaching. She seems to close her eyes as if she was taking a short snooze and will suddenly snap out to correct Ibu's reading without even looking at the mushaf. She also used to teach in the Sultan's Palace and quite often the family had a dilemma of over eating telur rebus(hard boiled eggs) given as bunga telur from the Royalty during Khatam Al-Quran, the finishing of quran recitation by the prince or princess. She told us that theres one time almost a few weeks they had been eating hard boiled eggs on the menu just to finish off the eggs.

>>The madrasah where tok used to teach

>>The bedok, usually used to wake the villagers moment before fajr prayer

>>The loudspeaker calling people for prayer

>>Serene view

I've learned that they had undergo a great ordeal of effort in sustaining and bringing up the family with love and religious values. Tokki and Tok, we miss you. Thanks for our Ibu =)
